Hirons employee-owners mark 44 years in business with outing at Victory Field

In honor of Founder’s Day, first student awarded the Tom Hirons IU Media School Scholarship

INDIANAPOLIS

Hirons, an advertising, public relations and digital agency with offices in Indianapolis and Chicago, celebrated 44 years in business this month. On June 8, the company spent Founder’s Day at an Indians game at Victory Field.

Tom Hirons founded his namesake communications company in 1978, shortly after his graduation from IU Bloomington.

“Tom started this company down in Bloomington, on the square. He had a great vision,” Dr. Jim Parham, CEO of Hirons, said. “For more than four decades, Hirons has performed client-centric work and helped companies, nonprofits and government agencies achieve solid results. We’ve excelled because we are an agency of doers who never settle for the first idea or easy way out.”

Among those in attendance were Tom Hirons, founder and chairman of the Hirons Board of Directors, and Emily Harrison, director of development and alumni relations for the IU Media School. Harrison spoke about the inaugural recipient of the Tom Hirons scholarship earlier this year, Caterina DeSantis. DeSantis is a rising junior in the IU Media School majoring in media advertising.

Tom Hirons shared some of the challenges of those early years. “We had to be scrappy – it was impossible to be a full-service agency, in Bloomington, before the internet. But we had a vision and that was to do great work. And we knew we had to surround ourselves with people who were smarter than we were.”

He sees the same drive for excellence in today’s team: “This is an agency of really smart people. You are really good individually, but you are great together. You lift each other up.”

When the agency moved its headquarters to Indianapolis in 2012, it transitioned the company to an Employee Stock Ownership Plan. Today, Hirons is 100% employee-owned.
