Honoring Tom Hirons’ leadership

Tom Hirons Internship

Today, and every day, do something bold.

Before founding Hirons in 1978, Tom Hirons’ path wasn’t just marked by textbooks and lectures; it was shaped by the wisdom, influence and guidance he found at Indiana University. During his time at IU, Tom studied under Philip Ward Burton, an esteemed IU School of Journalism professor whose legacy in advertising was as vast as it was profound. It was under Burton’s mentorship that Tom honed his craft, learning not just the technical aspects of advertising but the human connection that lies at the heart of great communication.

Fast forward nearly five decades, and Tom Hirons has not only built a leading advertising, public relations and digital agency, but he has also made a lasting impact on future generations of advertising professionals. With over 18+ years spent teaching as the J. Stewart Riley Endowed Chair of the IU School of Journalism, Tom nurtured talent. He further used his passion to teach countless students in the Department of Telecommunications, a precursor to the Media School, as a guest lecturer. IU was more than a stepping stone; it was a catapult for Tom’s career. He credits the university with shaping the values and vision that back Hirons and his preparedness to enter the world of advertising.

The Tom Hirons Internship is a reflection of Tom’s core values: a commitment to education, a sense of generosity and an unwavering belief in doing things the right way. Through this internship, promising students will gain real-world experience and the mentorship they need to make their impact, just as Tom has done for the past 50 years.
