¿CÓMO TE INTERESÓ EN LA INDUSTRIA?
I’ve always had a passion for writing and connecting with people. I started out as a journalism major in college, but quickly gravitated toward the public relations and advertising side of my course work. While I would not call myself artistic, I am creative. Once I realized there was a myriad of opportunities to channel that creativity and that I could make a career out of it, I knew this was the industry that I wanted to be in.
HOW DID YOU BREAK INTO THE INDUSTRY AND LAND YOUR FIRST JOB?
My first marketing job was for a local nonprofit. I originally started as an intern during my senior year. At that time, they had a very small marketing and communications team but created a position for me upon graduating. I led in-house marketing initiatives for a handful of nonprofits over the course of a decade before moving onto agency work.
WHAT PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS DO YOU NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THE INDUSTRY?
As someone who works in a very client-facing role, strong communication, strategic thinking and relationship-building skills are critical. The ability to truly listen to our clients, understand their needs (sometimes even the unspoken ones), and then translate those into actionable strategies is what helps ensure our clients’ success and creates strong partnerships.
FUERA DE LA OFICINA, ¿CUÁLES SON ALGUNOS DE TUS HOBBIES O PASIONES?
I love cycling. When the weather is warm, I ride along the Monon or Cultural Trail most days of the week. I have identical twin girls who keep me busy. I’m also a big fan of live music, coffee, and food. If I’m not with my kids or on my bike, you’ll probably find me at a local coffee shop, restaurant, or music venue. Indianapolis has a vibrant local scene for all these things, and I enjoy supporting it.
¿CUÁL FUE SU PRIMER TRABAJO?
I was a sandwich artist at Subway in high school!
WHAT’S ONE IMPORTANT TIP YOU WOULD SHARE WITH ANYONE LOOKING TO GO INTO THE AGENCY WORLD?
Network, network, network. Whether you’re still in school and looking to start your career or you’re making a mid-career shift, building strong relationships in and around the industry will help you grow and make a name for yourself. Indy has great local chapters for industry groups such as the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), the American Marketing Association (AMA) and CreativeMornings that are the perfect place to start.
WHAT IS THE MOST MEANINGFUL PART OF YOUR JOB?
The most meaningful part of my job is seeing the direct impact of our work on our clients’ success. I am fortunate to work with an incredible team at Hirons, and I love collaborating with my colleagues — brainstorming ideas and developing strategies that help bring our clients’ visions to life. Having worked in-house before, I understand the challenges of executing big initiatives with limited resources. It’s incredibly rewarding to provide that support and empower our clients to achieve their goals.
¿CUÁL ES TU RESTAURANTE FAVORITO EN LA CIUDAD?
Bodhi on Mass Ave. Everything on their menu, from food to drinks, it so well done. I think about their Massaman curry dish more than I should probably admit out loud.
WHAT’S ONE THING YOU EVERY DAY AND CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT?
Coffee — it’s a staple in my morning routine. Fortunately, Indy has many great coffee shops to fuel my habit, several of which are conveniently within walking distance of the office!
¿CUÁL ES TU PARTE FAVORITA DE TRABAJAR EN HIRONS?
The variety. I have the opportunity to work with a wide range of clientele and I love being able to connect with so many different organizations, initiatives and industries in this role. No two days are ever quite the same!
