Employee Highlight: Hattie Saylor

BY Hattie Saylor IN Agency Life

How did you become interested in advertising/PR/media/public affairs/marketing? How did you break into the industry and land your first job?

I became interested when I was searching for what I wanted to major in! I was not sure but knew I loved to write and talk to people, so strategic communication was the best option. After finding out more about advertising/PR, I knew I wanted to start my career at an agency. I was lucky enough to have my first agency experience here at Hirons as an intern in January 2018 and then was hired full time at the end of May.

What would you consider the specializations/most important tools of the trade?

Being able to work under pressure and act fast. There have been times where I have my whole day planned out but then an emergency comes up and I have to readjust. There will always be a fire that needs to be put out so always be prepared for anything.

What characteristics do you need to be successful in the industry?

You need to be flexible, tactical and organized. All of these qualities will make someone successful in the agency world. You need to be able to go with the flow but also be confident enough to speak up when needed.

Do you have any interesting hobbies/second jobs/bits of information that make you pop as an individual?

I wouldn’t say a hobby or second job but I love dogs and yoga. Luckily, there is a local brewery that combines both, which makes me very happy.

When and where do you have your best ideas?

My best ideas come to me when I am about to fall asleep or in the shower. Neither is an ideal situation but I find my mind running when it shouldn’t be!

What has been the most exciting project/campaign that you’ve worked on at Hirons?

I have been lucky enough to work on a couple of research projects for clients. These have been really cool because I have seen them through from start to finish, from helping to write the survey to analyzing and processing the data. But, I have to say that all of our clients are interesting so I like working on all of them!

Why is effective advertising/PR so important for the growth and success of organizations?

You want your company to be top of mind and if people aren’t talking, your company won’t go anywhere. Advertising/PR is the vehicle that will get the buzz out and make sure people can’t stop talking.

What’s one important tip you would share with anyone looking to go into the agency world?

Never stop trying. To obtain my first internship at an agency, I had to send three separate emails to multiple agencies before I got any kind of response back. If you cannot find a way in through an internship or entry-level job, show your interest. Go on shadow days or informational interviews, keep expanding that network and something will eventually stick.

What is the most meaningful part of your job?

Working with such amazing people. Although my team is small, we are mighty! Having such great co-workers can really change everything about a job, and I am so very thankful.
