How to Ace an Agency

A lot goes into agencies. More times than not, they are fast-paced, fun and forever in flux. Multitasking is a must and a good attitude goes a long way.

Here are a few tips on how to ace an agency:

Understand each department

Every agency is slightly different in its operations. It’s important to understand all departments and everyone’s roles within them. When you gain an understanding of what comes before, after and during your responsibilities, you can better communicate with your client and your teammates. You’ll have a better grasp of appropriate timelines and what needs to happen to get things done. After all, teamwork makes the dream work.

Find mentors

It is extremely beneficial to find someone within the walls of your agency and someone from the outside world who can be your mentors. Soak up everything you can from them. Ask questions often. And always, always listen. They will guide you through tough times, support you when you excel and give you advice when you need it most – even when you don’t ask for it. They will tell you what they wish they would have done, what mistakes they’ve made, and what you can do to shine. Having mentors will not just help you survive, they will force you to thrive.

Hone your craft

You have a job and corresponding responsibilities. But there’s more to you than the title on your business card. Dive deep into who you are – a copywriter, an account manager, etc. – and completely obsess. Go to conferences, attend webinars and shake down Lynda.com for resources to strengthen your skills and find new ones. This means taking some extra time before or after your nine-to-five, but I promise it’s worth it. When you go beyond the status quo, you’ll find you’re capable of things you never imagined. Not only will you better yourself but you’ll add to your value as a teammate and your worth as an employee.

It’s easy to get lost in the hustle and bustle of agency life. It’s filled with learning curves and tests of your patience. But you’ll also experience excitement, newfound interests and teammates who have your back. So make connections, be open to learning and give it time. Above all, do your best and go with your gut. The rest will follow.
